A.M. Routine: Drink Your Citrus

Image

What I’m celebrating today: Happy just about February! This amount of happiness knowing January is about over is pretty much making my heart smile. Spring is that much closer. Ahh…and it’s Friday. Loveliness.

Lately, as you know, I’ve been a bit down and out. Winter has been especially horrid this year for me, but I can’t say I haven’t been a little more pro-active about it. (Although I might have indulged in serious heart-wrentching country music from the 90s lately- that shit isn’t for the faint of heart.) Why is that when we’re down we usually want to jam to songs that are just as sad? Allison Krauss, I’m looking at you. You know, I actually need an answer for that one.

 Anyhow, I used to run pretty avidly, however the past few years have definitely seen a big decline. So, in November before all the NYR’s started rolling out at the gym, I decided to start trekking back to where I used to be. Goal: Run past 15 mins. without looking like a zombie afterwards. Last week I finally(yyy) felt wonderful and happy about having to run. Pro-active score: one check for Laura. Continue reading “A.M. Routine: Drink Your Citrus”

Monday Morning Madness: Little Celebrations

ImageImage

Like most moments of our lives, things seem to pass by so quickly and we begin to wonder where all the time has gone. How we ended up in a particular place and it almost can begin to feel like life has a certain domino effect to it.  This has definitely been a theme to my thoughts lately, just thinking about how it’s already about to be the end of August and my birthday (i.e. October in 2 months, what?!) is about to be around the corner. I think this year has been the quickest year to date, but so far it’s been an amazing one.

 This past weekend was about celebrating that last bits of summer and also welcoming new opportunities writing-wise, and other ideas, etc…that I’m looking forward to.  I will be posting pictures soon of Charleston, too! Anyhow, lately life handed me this thought; It’s so easy to become excited about where things are headed at times that we begin to completely (and almost unconsciously) dismiss those moments where we didn’t feel like we had any great ‘grand’ ideas, or had a goal that seemed almost untouchable at one point.  I suppose I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the meeting of those two phases in life. I’m at a place where I can see behind me- and I can see in front me.  It’s a fabulous feeling, even if things don’t work out. I suppose this is another phase of being in your 20s, and for me, just about mid-20s. Serious gasp, after that one.  But you know? It’s actually lovely to feel the ground not be quite as shaky.  I emphasize ‘quite’- but it’s a step.  Is this a just-about-mid-20s thought?  Ah, anyhow- this was me celebrating this somewhat ‘meeting place’ of my life, so far, this morning.  A new little routine I’m taking up…now.  You know how I’m all about the little things that make life feel a bit more like Wonderland. And p.s…it’s a dangerously delicious, and simple, combination- so beware.

 I mean, really, what’s better than strawberries, goat cheese, and cinnamon graham crackers?

 I would love to know- what are some of your small, yet magical, routines to celebrate life wanders? xoxo.

What I’m Adoring: Chic Graphics/Comfortable Weekends

ImageImage

I’m a big believer in the graphic tee. In fact, nine times out of ten that’s what I’m wearing with some jeans, Supergas, and a pretty red lipstick. So when I came across these four graphic tees from Chicwish, I had to share my finds to kick off all the sales that begin (right now) this weekend! I’m also planning on hitting up all the awesome sells over at Gilt, their shoe sell is outta’ control! Cheers to a happy weekend full of comfy clothes, early morning cappuccinos, and being thankful.  xoxo

p.s…have you seen Free People’s new video for their August collection? It has once-upon-a-time Girl’s star, “Charlie”, + Paris + red wine + falling in love. I’m a bit obsessed, it’s on there site. It’s sort of a must see. xo.

In My Cup: Happy Anniversary, My Lovely Blog.

{peach sharpies for writing, fresh vanilla-bean infused coffee/my ridiculous awesome mug, and crackling wick vanilla scented candles to make up for a calming winter fireplace sound}

So, WordPress gave me a tiny happy anniversary well wishing this morning- which I thought was too awesome.  I didn’t even know it had been a year since starting this blog (we’ll nix the fact I was sort of MIA for 5 months), but I couldn’t help but think it’s been a wonderful outlet for me to share my thoughts and feelings…and recipes and random ideas that I think up or come across.  Hopefully this next year will be even brighter, and somehow, I feel like it will be.  I figured since I was a little too late for Monday Morning Madness, I would just keep it a simple day of reflecting on the little things that have been making life bright as of late.  Thank you for following my blog and coming along this journey of life, with me. xoxo.

Blushing Berries: DIY Beauty

Image

Speaking of keeping myself balanced with fun projects, I am always up for a good DIY project- especially when it involves homemade products for your skin. There is something really light and refreshing about not questioning whether you are applying some sort of heavy synthetic chemicals or disease-causing additives on your skin. Not to mention using fun, summer-inspired, ingredients that won’t cost you ten bucks for a tube of questionable goo. I’ve been playing around the idea of creating a natural, berry cheek & lip stain…and I think I finally got it down. It’s not a hard process and definitely fun for a lazy weekend ‘craft’. It’s my first time playing around with the idea, so if anyone tries this out and has some suggestions of their own spins and tricks, do let us in my dears! Simply leave me a comment below. Anyhow, cheers to pretty berry makeup for summer evenings out! xoxo.

{I clearly used cupcake holders (the plastic-ish kind) because they bend really well, especially after you are pouring blackberry juice (hopefully not) everywhere}

ImageImageImageImageImage

In first mixing bowl, add about a tablespoon of your choice of facial oil (mine is a mix of organic almond, argan, ylang ylang, and vanilla bean by a local producer called Small Keys, which is amazingness) and about a teaspoon of shea butter- mix together. First step is to Mash the blackberries in your mixing bowl, making sure you really pay attention to separating the pulp from the berry’s juice. Next Pour your berry juice (remembering to separate pulp) into your mixing bowl of facial oil and shea butter. Mix the oils and berry juice together, this is probably the hardest part because you want the color broken into the oil as much as possible. Final step is to Heat your mixture. I used the stovetop on a med-high heat for about one minute, just make sure it never bubbles- you are just looking for the color to really become a part of the oils. Carefully pour your lovely new berry lip/cheek stain into your repurposed compact; stick in the freezer just a tad bit to hang out with your skinny girl vodka (of course), so it can set. I will admit, it’s best to store your berry stain in a compact that has a deeper setting. Often times, the natural oils will change consistency depending on varying temperatures. In this case, leftover eyeshadow compacts (think, baremineral’s eyeshadow) are usually best. I simply used my compact below because it was one of the only free spaces in my makeup drawer at the moment. Keep this in mind, and you’ll be good to go.

Voila! Berries- beauty’s best friend. xoxo, loves.

Saturday Mornings: Food & Fashion.

ImageImage

{raga animal print sweater}

Many moments I’ve found myself in lately have been ‘catastrophically awesome’. I believe this is going to be a new term with a serious phase in front of it. What exactly do I mean? Well, it means that is pretty much the feeling that goes hand-in-hand with your 20s. I’ve found myself here and there, worried about things we simply shouldn’t worry about, because they will happen one way or another. However, trying to keep little spaces in my day where I’m doing tiny things to try and cohesively mend whatever is bothering me has seemed to help a lot. Like taking a few moments to flip through a magazine, or devote time to particular projects I’m working on, looking through recipes I’d like to try out, start a new DIY project, etc. Last week, I even re-purposed a book solely for the purpose of ‘writing to the Universe.’ Why yes, my loves, it does sound a bit crazy. However, I highly recommend trying it out. Mostly because after I’ve been doing it I feel like things have been smoothing themselves out all in the presence of good vibes and karma. Who knows? Maybe the Universe is indeed listening to us if we just say what we’re thinking, and direct it its’ way. I’ve really been on this Eat, Pray, Love (like with this article I just finished, Eat, Pray, Love Intentionally) kick lately. But hey, if things end up being ‘catastrophically awesome’…I’ll take it.

In other realms of life, you can see, above, this Saturday has been consistent with Blackberry Muffin Cakes, coffee, and unintentional matching of Nordstrom Anniversary finds. Food & fashion, true loves. The link to my (on sale) sweater is above, and it’s the softest most amazing sweater to perhaps ever grace the earth. I love it. Plus the print was too wonderful not to dream of wearing it everyday, even in the middle of summer. Bless me. Anyhow, this morning I grabbed some of summer’s prettiest Blackberries from the farmer’s market and decided to whip up mini blackberry cakes…which ended up being mostly blueberry/half blackberry. But whatever. The Blackberries were prettier and stole the show. I included my gluten-free recipe to them, below. I have a real love affair with blueberry muffins, so I wanted the classic to be the base, but with added blackberries for a pretty summer dessert that incorporated the best of both worlds. I like the idea of mini cakes mostly because it feels a little more dangerous than regular muffins- yet these are pretty much guilt-free. Feel free to play with this recipe as much as you like, as always. Hope you’re having a lovely, calm, de-stressed, Saturday. xoxo.

Image

mini blackberry cakes

ingredients

1 3/4 cup of brown rice flour

1 cup of naturally sweetened vanilla almond milk

2 eggs

1 tsp. baking powder

1/4 cup of grapeseed oil (I eyed it, so tread lightly with the oil)

1/2 cup coconut palm sugar

1 tbsp. agave syrup

1 cup blueberries (mine were frozen, I’m a cheat)

1/2 cup farmer’s market blackberries

 Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix brown rice flour, almond milk, eggs, and grapeseed oil. After broken down, add all sugar- agave and coconut palm, and your baking powder. Next, carefully fold in your berries so they stay whole and do not break apart in your batter. Pour into your pan (I used my tart pan for the ‘cake’ vibe.) Bake for 20 minutes. Enjoy with your favorite Nordstrom anniversary sweater, of course.

In My Cup: Weekend Style and Sorts.

Image

{the best iced latte I have ever had at the 7th Street Farmer’s Market, with Vanilla Bean-infused sugar}

Hm, for the most part life as of late has been pretty busy with here and there, and a lot of craziness in-between. I was stoked about moving somewhere new for the past month, and then like most things, my plans went into a hectic downpour and I decided to stay in my current apartment. In which, yet again, I should know my luck because I waited until the itsy bitsy last minute (as any person of my nature would, life is unpredictable, random invites to Paris could always be hovering around the corner, right?) and someone grabbed my lovely apartment right from beneath me. So now I’m something like a nomad, per usual. Oh, the loveliness of life. Anyhow, after about 3 hours of complete spazz mode seeing I had nine days to figure out a new place to call my habitat, I opted for a bottle of wine. I thought it was a great idea. It must have been actually, because the next day I was notified the heaven-sent angel said he was in ‘no hurry’ to move in (it’s like, where are you going to live you mysterious man? Are you just drifting along, or did you just finish ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and get all lovely and thankful on me?) so I said karma would grace him any day now, like any normal person would respond. He is giving another 2 months for me to wait until the last minute. What a lovely, indeed.

Image

{I had to include a quote, you can’t reference ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, without a quote. It’s impossible}

Image

 {my first choice for stress-management, naturally}

So with the two months in hand, I’m still all over the place as the where I want to move. I could just stay in Charlotte for another year to get a bit more steady, but then my whole ‘Life is short, Laura White, what the hell are you doing?’ voice blows me away like some god-like conscious. Stating the above when I least expect it, like while I’m making coffee, or while I’m in the shower, making pancakes, watching a move, driving, etc. I’m actually kind of a hazard at this moment in my life, please consider this a warning if you see me driving past you…god-like voices from our conscious do not discriminate while driving, apparently.

However, aside from my craziness, as always. I hope your Saturday is lazy and full of summertime randoms. Here are some things/inspirations in my cup lately…
