Don’t Get Naked? : Have We Lowered Our Standards of ‘Au-Naturel’?

Image

(via free people)

So the other day I bought a bag of ‘natural caramel corn.’ The label offering its’ kindest words of, “Hey! I’m sorta’ healthy, and I’ve got pretty packaging with that lucky word, ‘Natural’, on it! Buy me!” It was, indeed, only three ingredients- so I bought it without a second thought.  And, being a pretty healthy-minded young woman I felt that was about the ‘healthiest’ caramel corn I could have bought (i.e. justified, sort of). That is, until recently when I started hearing about the Naked Juice ordeal. How they have been using synthetic added ingredients (i.e. GMO soy, synthetic fiber, etc.) that they didn’t have to necessarily label on their packaging because of the lack of regulation of food here in the US. They are trying to deny all of this, of course, which is why they decided to ‘settle’ the matter, rather than tackle it. Which brings me to my point and back to my lovely caramel corn; Exactly how did we manage to get ‘Natural’ out of caramel corn (of all things) and an array of other foods parading the grocery aisles? I will kindly wait for an explanation, all while considering myself guilty as charged– I’m clearly no saint. And, for that second of justifying both the caramel corn and a product made by Pepsi Co. as being ‘au-natural’– what does that say about our society and what we consider, well, just plain healthy?

Image

Clearly, as the years have brought a bounty of trying to get back to ‘simple’, we’ve also allowed marketing to create a field of ignorant bliss. I will be the first to say I am horrid at saying “no” to packaging that promises what’s inside. That, of course is the wonders of great marketing, but I think Naked Juice is a lesson that needed to be learned. If we truly are moving towards more ‘home-grown health’, we have to think outside the box of consumerism. These days, marketing health is almost as necessary as actually obtaining it.  Companies will, and always will, try and take the easy way out for a buck or two (or millions, ya’ know), especially when our country makes it blatantly okay to do so.  If the FDA would let them have it, they were only bound to have their cake and eat it, too. That’s exactly what Naked Juice did.  The only ‘natural’ and ‘simple’ intention they had was to sell us $4 dollar juices, that is only worth about a couple of nickels.

Image

With that, I don’t think we’ve necessarily lowered our standards of what ‘natural’ constitutes (fresh, local produce, etc.), we have just lowered our standards of what that looks like. Let’s be honest, we are attracted to pretty things. If we weren’t there wouldn’t be a fashion industry, or marketing, a multi-billion dollar beauty industry, etc. There has to be more ‘conscious consumerism’ to counteract companies like Pepsi Co. who are making money off of what isn’t really there. ‘Natural’ is pretty simple, and it isn’t caramel corn (sadly) or processed juice made by a company that is known for soda. Health is natural.  Moderation, being smart about the food we choose to buy, and most certainly our own awareness of what our own standards are when it comes to these choices. Hopefully this was a thoughtful message that came across you today, we are in control of the world we live in by these simple choices we make everyday.

That’s my Friday rant, my random thought, and quick point. Cheers to Friday, loves! xoxo

Pretty Simple: Wanna’ Be Healthier?

Image

Back when I used to juice basically every single day and eat like a fairy, I felt pretty damn amazing.  All the hype is true, juicing and eating a lot of raw foods is a wonderful, marvelous, amazing idea. But there’s this thing…perhaps you’ve heard of it? It’s called real life.

Rewind to a mere few years ago- I remember the days I used to prance around and say in my best granola accent, “It’s so easy to eat like this everyday! What’s the problem? Just bring your juicer everywhere you go and you’ve got that shit down!” I’m no hypocrite either, I’ve been known to carry a couple grocery bags/juicer/small basil plant/etc. around with me wherever I went- in the glorious name of, “I’ll be fuc*ing healthy if it’s the last thing I do.” I had no shame. People looked at me like I was some crazy green-juice lady…and I still was full speed ahead, taking the name with pride.

However, after time I started to shed some of my old ways here and there (i.e. the juicer is no longer a staple in my…pocketbook), but I still wanted to keep the energy I seemed to have infinite amounts of when I was a walking produce isle. And so, here and now, I give to the, the loveliest green single-celled microalgae you will ever lay your pretty little eyes on. Okay, aside from how it sounds, Chlorella is basically a life-support for anyone who needs something to keep their bodies more balanced (i.e. alkaline, etc.), cleaner, and energy efficient. I had to share it on here because every time I go without it, I can tell my body just doesn’t feel as, well, well. Chlorella is full of naturally occurring chlorophyll, iron, protein, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. So, it’s obviously pretty amazing stuff, and I’ve recommended it to my friends only about one million times.  So now it’s your turn, woo! It can be used as a daily super-detox as well, to protect us from everyday free radicals and heavy metals that are constantly around us, trying to make us…useless.

This was just a quick thought I wanted to share with you guys, it’s such an amazing, quick thing to do that has amazing benefits- so why not? If you decide to make a trip to your health food store, you want to make sure it reads ‘broken cell wall‘ on the bottle, that way it is most easily digested and used by our bodies. If it is not, it basically is worthless, so that’s very important! ‘Organic’ chlorella is also the best way to make sure the sourcing is clean and not…iffy. I recommend taking anywhere from 200-1000mg starting off, depending on how much you juice, eating habits, etc. It is definitely worth a try if you want more natural energy. Oh, and it’s also AMAZING for our skin, so if you are dealing with any breakouts or feel like your skin needs some tlc, chlorella is my go-to option. If you have any questions, or other ideas for quick natural ways to have more energy- feel free to leave me a comment! xoxo.

p.s here are some informational videos on chlorella…

Dr. Oz on chlorella and heavy metals.

really interesting talk with internationally renown natural health physician, Dr. Mercola (it’s long, but interesting- starts talking about chlorella at 5:18)

and these two, who are basically as excited as I am about chlorella, I mean, they’re really excited. (p.s.s…at least you’ll laugh) via natural news

happy granola-eatin’ themed Thursday! ha, xoxo.

In My Cup: Oh, Hello, Sweet Summer.

Image

Summer brings about a certain kind of happiness and absolute recklessness. It’s a breathtaking combination, really. A time where we all feel light and our cares seem a little(eee) farther away. It’s a sun-kissed mirage (even when we may still be vampires, hello moi) with plenty of fizzy, light, beverages that muses a makeover for time- just a lovely haze it all becomes. Outfits consist of swimsuits with some sort of circa 70s’ blue silk robe we (perhaps?) stole from our mother’s closet. Who knows, maybe it’s just me on that one. Anyhow, we don’t even know why it seems more than appropriate to lift all responsibilities and take a cross-country drive through little towns when we’re broke (but we’re story-rich), or why we, women, take off hair in places that probably should be illegal all while casually insisting, “It doesn’t hurt that bad.”, while actually thinking, “So far, that is the worst thing that has ever happened to me.” All we know is there has to be some sort of vibrant glowing golden book that explains in detail why a time of year seems to make us want to dance around in the sun with sunflowers to match and say fuck it all, but, until then- let’s just cheers to that statement and run free. xoxo. Here’s what’s in my cup, my dears, styled by summer, of course.

1. My new vow to read myself to sleep this summer instead of Arrested-Development-binge-watch-myself-to-sleep. (Magazines are clearly acceptable.)

2. The best self-tanner ever. I loved seeing it in Elle’s “30 All-Natural Must-Haves” this month, I discovered it when living in the city a few year’s ago and fell in love, it gives the perfect glow with NO orange grossness, and I’m basically Edward Cullen’s sister. It also truly leaves your skin unbelievably soft, my pick if you’re trying to get a pretty glow. {Lavera Self Tanner}

3. Aren’t these beachy pastel-hued clutches absolutely lovely? I instantly gravitated to them when I spotted their fun and bright colors in a tiny shop by my apartment. The designer, Allison Howington, started ‘My A La Mode’ this year and you’ll know each one is one-of-a-kind because she hand makes and paints them herself! As if I didn’t already adore them, she paints them in every pastel ice-cream-inspired color imaginable. {Shop them here

4. Facial oil is my favorite pick for moisturizer during the hottest time of year, it’s a cult-worthy rule of mine. Your skin needs to be balanced to look and feel its’ best, and essential oils are the most calming ways to treat your skin. I found this guy last week by Seventh Generation’s new line of ‘Boost serums’- I chose the one infused with skin-nurturing Baobab oil, which is pretty much a miracle oil for your skin. It is also infused with mint essential oil, which feels heavenly and tingly fresh after washing morning and night. They might just be my new favorite facial oil line. Oh, and did I mention it’s also super affordable too, running for under $10 in some places? Latte money, my dears, is ringing. P.s…they just launched the line, so I don’t have the link, but keep a look out at your local drugstore. They are worth the search.

1. This lipstick in ‘Poppy’ is most definitely the perfect red, I’ve found it. It’s bright, yet with a deep undertone, that makes the color a bit mysterious and vintage feeling. It’s summer and winter and all the seasons wrapped into one marvelous, red. I’m obviously living in it at the moment. (literally and figuratively)

2. New York in no match to any other when it comes to frozen yogurt havens, but I have been meaning to check this place out about 1000 times by now. So if you’re in the city, I’m jealous. What a perfect summer treat?

3. It speaks for itself, let’s just be honest. I mean, who doesn’t feel this way?

4. I’m a believer, a believer in heaven-like bedding, one in which you fall into like a bath of bubbles and pillows, and vanilla scented angels. With that, West Elm is having a sale on bedding (which to me is grounds for party), and this one pretty much recites what is stated above. Plus the clean, symmetrical pattern doesn’t overwhelm the room, but rather gives it a soft, yet fun, feeling. Note: I may or may not admit it sold me when it recited it was inspired by ‘intricate Moroccan mosaic tiles’. I’m still not quite sure why that seems awesome, but I went with it.

5. ‘A novel about a life-altering, all-engulfing young love.’ Next book I will be reading. Sold to the girl in the crazy blue robe.

Memorial Weekend: BK; Rain; Beach; Books; Sun; Love; And Other Ponders.

Image

So I’ve been real MIA for the past few days as some of you may have seen, I didn’t even find the time to post for Monday Morning Madness, but I do hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day (as well as weekend)- with lots of good food, friends, and summer-ish entertainment. I ended up spending my Memorial Day weekend in my old home quarters in Brooklyn, NY. It was a needed trip to say the least, but definitely had its’ up and downs weather-wise and other ponders. Anyhow, I was all about doing some awesome posts while I was up because nothing inspires me quite like being in back in NY from the people to the places- but I found that Iphone’s and blogging is quite a mix…aka, posting is real(lll) difficult. So I decided to just live in the moment, take some time to breathe in the city, feel my youth, and catch up with everyone when I returned home to NC. Hope you loves are doing wonderful! Feeling a little of the Vitamin D from this weekend? 🙂 Well I’m sure I’ll be here all week, writing away about anything and everything- from my trip to a little surprise I have in store with a pretty interesting interview (hopefully). Until then, here’s just a couple photos from my Memorial Day weekend/today that kind of made it worthwhile/inspired me. From reading, to taking in some scenery on the beach yesterday, themin’ random matching outfits from one of my best friends-whose basically the boy version of me kinda’ (twins?), to rainy days in NYC (that resembled something of winter at times), peach laced-trim fedora hats that I kinda’ fell in love with AFTER I bought it, and plenty of laughter to even out even the most absurd weather. Oh, and of course mermaid-inspired nail polish with lovely blue skies and a pool to match. Light, fresh, things that this time of year brings bounty of (most of the times, that is, ahem). Anyhow, I’m sure there’s more to come since my Iphone camera and I have become madly in love with one another.

{Pure and Pink Worthy Randoms: Forever 21 Fedora, Sally Hansen polish in ‘S-teal A Base’, Beach Worthy Book ‘Beautiful Ruins’ by Jess Walters, New Josie Maran Summer Lip Shade in ‘Berry Bliss’ (I wore it basically this whole post, ‘obsessed’ is an understatement) p.s…we ate from Bliss Cafe in Williamsburg in the shot below-it’s a cozy little nook for lunch if you’re in the area and want something on the healthier side. It’s the little things. xoxo}

Monday Morning Madness: A Coffee Makeover. {Humanitarian Style}

Image

We can pretend like we don’t drink coffee like it’s water, but it would probably be a lie. Coffee shops are in abundance, and I preferably would like to try all of them. However, I do like to pretend I’m in little cafes, writing, on the reg’- so it’s nice to mock their style…at home. It’s also a must in this house that coffee is the following; wonderfully sweet (without nasty health-breaking refined sugar), supporting the ‘locals’ (buy your beans from a cool shop in your neighborhood!), and a milk that brings some positive vibes to your bod (Sunflower milk anyone?)…

Raw and Reckless Revamp: Beautify Your Dinner {Date.}

Sometimes when I’m thinking of something to do for dinner, things get complicated real quick. Not to mention time consuming. This recipe, however, is certainly neither of them, not to mention it is delicious and great for your skin and healthier for you… Continue reading “Raw and Reckless Revamp: Beautify Your Dinner {Date.}”

Late Night Treat: Warm Latte-Ice-Cream Milk

Image

You are viewing my wonderful night. It’s been consistent; lots of binging on girlie movies, my couch, warmly-lit almond vanilla-candles, snacking, and cuddling with my dogs. However, you know there is that certain time where, if the movie is dragging a bit, you keep going back and fourth to the kitchen. The wonderful debate on what will have the joy of being eaten next. You’ve sampled about everything in site, and it’s time for last, but certainly not least. The Freezer: A dangerous place for women in nocturnal pondering. Then you see the pint of ice cream staring back at you. You blankly blink at one another. “Don’t move”- you think- “Maybe it won’t see me.” Well, of course it did see me, but sometimes you just have to pull out all the stops and get a little creative. So that’s just what I did.

Image

 The answer became ‘Warm Latte-Ice-Cream Milk’, and though you may be like ‘wtf’? It’s a pretty amazing little concoction. I made a fresh Almond milk latte earlier, and then decided I wasn’t in the mood, so I threw it in my ice-cube (thing?) and called it a day. I was thinking homemade Frappuccino at the time, but this seemed more ‘late night’ appropriate when ‘coziness’ was the aura of tonight.
